The National Day of the People's Republic of China, sometimes referred to as National Day and National Day, is a holiday established to commemorate the founding of the People's Republic of China and is celebrated on October 1 of each year. On October 1, 1949, the Founding Ceremony of the People's Republic of China was held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, and the Central People's Government of the People's Republic of China was officially established.
The holiday is designated as an official holiday or a public holiday in Mainland China and its territories, Hong Kong and Macao. The statutory National Day holiday in mainland China is 3 days from October 1 to October 3, but is rescheduled according to what day of the week the National Day falls on that year. This is usually done by adjusting the weekend off of the other week to be around the 3-day statutory holiday to connect with the weekend of that week, thus creating a 7-day mini holiday. In case of other statutory holidays such as Mid-Autumn Festival, 8 consecutive holidays are used. In Hong Kong, the statutory holidays used to be 2 days in 1997 and 1998, but later changed to 1 day; in Macao, 2 days.
Various commemorative events are held during the National Day to honor the revolutionary martyrs of the People's Republic of China. Since 2008, every National Day, the Party and State leaders have laid a floral basket at the Monument to the People's Heroes located in Tiananmen Square. Since the 1950s, a portrait of Dr. Sun Yat-sen has been displayed in the north of the People's Heroes Monument facing Tiananmen Square as a tribute to Dr. Sun and his leadership of the The Revolution of 1911.
