International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on 8 March each year to celebrate the important contributions and achievements of women in the economic, political and social spheres.
International Women's Day is a holiday celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a day when the achievements of women are recognised, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, language, culture, economic status and political stance. The focus of the celebrations varies from region to region, from a general celebration of respect, appreciation and love for women to a celebration of women's achievements in the economic, political and social spheres.
In December 1949, the State Council of the Central People's Government of China established March 8 of each year as International Women's Day.
The United Nations has celebrated International Women's Day every year on 8 March, starting with the International Women's Year in 1975. International Women's Day has become a United Nations Day of Remembrance. Some people wear purple ribbons to celebrate this day.
It is an official holiday in countries such as Afghanistan, Belarus, Cambodia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Russia, Ukraine and Vietnam. In some countries, such as Romania, Bosnia, Bulgaria and Chile, the day is not a public holiday, but is still widely celebrated. In Italy, to celebrate this day, men give women yellow mimosas. In countries such as Portugal, women's groups often celebrate the holiday with 'women-only' dinners and parties on the evening of 8 March. In Pakistan, women working in the formal and informal sectors celebrate International Women's Day every year to commemorate their struggle for the rights they deserve in the face of many cultural and religious constraints. During International Women's Day, the entire population of Kazakhstan will be able to take three days off, which will take place on 6, 7 and 8 March.
